August 2025 Updates
Hi to all our TMP family,
After a rough few weeks (feels like months!), it’s nice to see some blue skies again. It’s still cool out there, but reports from TMP boaties tell us there have been some magic, glassy days on the water — great stuff!
Spring is just around the corner too. The season where everything kicks back into gear, and we’re here to help you make the most of it.
In this newsletter, we’ve got everything from spring fishing tips to a quick safety gear refresher, last-chance haulout deals, and a great outboard service promo with a bonus cleaning kit up for grabs.
We’re also sharing a few words from Dayne at NZ Diving & Salvage, who summed up what we’re all about: big boatyard facilities with small boatyard service. It’s something we’re proud of — and we work hard to keep that balance right.
As always, if you need a hand with anything or want to chat through a booking, the team is just a call away.
See you out there!
– Martin and the Tamaki Marine Park Team
Spring Fishing: The Workups Are On The Way
Spring is almost upon us and that usually means some of the best Gulf fishing is just around the corner. As a rule, we see the water warming up, baitfish start moving in, and that’s when things can really kick off.
We’re talking classic workups - gannets diving, dolphins herding pilchards, and hungry snapper and kingies underneath snapping up the leftovers.
Snapper typically head in to spawn during spring, feeding hard along the way. That often makes for easier fishing closer in, perfect for boats, kayaks, or even a cheeky land-based session.
Kahawai are usually not far behind - great sport on light gear - and kingfish start making more of an appearance too, especially around structure and the edges of workups.
You might also run into a few gurnard, trevally, or the odd big visitor like a mako or hapuku.
Water Safety Refresher: Check It Before You Wreck It
With spring and summer just around the corner, it’s the perfect time for a quick gear check before the busy boating season kicks off. After all, no one wants to be caught out on the water with sub-standard safety gear - or worse, nothing at all.
Here’s a quick refresher on what to look over before your next adventure:
Lifejackets – Check for wear, correct sizing, and that they’re easy to access. Inflatable lifejackets? Make sure the canisters are still good to go.
Flares – Make sure they’re still in date and stored in a dry, secure place.
Fire extinguishers – Check the pressure gauge and expiry date, and give it a shake to stop the powder from settling.
First-aid kits – Top them up with any essentials that have expired or been used.
EPIRBs and VHF radios – Test them and check batteries are charged and current.
Need a refresher on what’s required? Head over to Maritime NZ or Coastguard NZ for up-to-date advice and safety tips. Let’s all do our bit to keep things safe out there this season!
Big Marina Facilities, Small Marina Service
"When you’re running a commercial marine operation like we are, it’s not always possible to lock in an exact time and date for maintenance or repair work — so having flexibility with haulout bookings can make life a whole lot easier. That’s one of the key reasons we swear by Tamaki Marine Park.
Martin and the team have always gone the extra mile, shifting our haulout times whenever needed, to make it work for us. That kind of flexibility isn’t something you always get at the big marinas.
The TMP boatyard has developed into a first-class facility too — the shed options are excellent, there’s plenty of space, and there’s a great crew of marine service providers on site — and we use them regularly.
If I had to sum it up, I’d say Tamaki Marine Park offers big marina facilities with small marina service. And that’s a rare combination."
